The Local Union
A Sense of Place

Local unions are the base and backbone of labor organizations. The everyday work of the local union involves looking after membersí needs, handling dues, negotiating local contracts and agreements, and seeing that they are enforced, etc. Local unions are also places where members go to meet and greet each other as brothers and sisters, united in a quest for the betterment of working and living conditions. Teamster locals are particularly noted for the sense of unity and community they engender in their members. These activities and artifacts help solidify this sense of belonging for Teamster members.
